Kicking off our 2023 Winter Workshop Series is Ron Bolze, a professor of Agriculture and Rangeland Management at Chadron University and coordinator for the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition (NGLC). The NGLC has taken steps to promote generational transition as a form of stewardship and the protection of conservation efforts made on the farm.

 As producers in our own Watershed work to improve their operations, many wonder what the future of the farm will be once they are done farming. The process of succession can be messy and uncomfortable, but Ron Bolze is ready to help make sense of the mess and share some insights on how to start conversations and begin your succession plan.

“If families don’t do adequate estate planning, often, the next generation has to sell the farm or the ranch to pay the inheritance tax. We work with farm and ranch families to help them to get their estate plan in place so they can reduce the inheritance tax burden.” With farms going under every year, succession planning could be the next management practice in your conservation plan.
